BICYCLE PROTECTION

Bicycle theft is an ongoing problem. Most bicycle thefts can be prevented by taking some simple precautions. You may increase the chances of recovering your bicycle, should it be stolen, by following some simple security procedures.

REGISTER YOUR BICYCLE

Registering your bicycle may assist in its recovery if it gets stolen. Thefts of bicycles can be reduced if you acknowledge the need for adequate security, and invest in equipment that will be effective.

IDENTIFICATY YOUR BICYCLE

Manufacturers mark most bicycles with a serial number. If yours does not have a serial number, engrave an identifying number on the frame, on the wheels or other components.

PROTECT YOUR BICYCLE

Record the make, model, and serial number of your bicycle and keep it in a safe place.

Use a case hardened chain or U shaped locks that are case hardened. These units are harder to cut or break.

Always lock your bicycle, never leave it unlocked, even if you're leaving it for only a moment.

Lock your bicycle and both wheels to a secured object which cannot be easily cut or broken.

If the manufacturer offers a warranty or insurance, register the lock and write down the lock's serial number and the date you bought it. Keep this information in a safe place.

A good way to discourage thieves is to use more than one kind of lock. Use a U lock through your frame and rear tire, and put a cable or chain through your frame and front tire.

A lock may be broken by putting it against a wall or sidewalk and smashing it with a hammer. If you use a padlock, try to put it where it's not close to the ground or against a wall or another solid surface.

When you leave your bike, remove any parts you can't lock.

Store your bicycle indoors whenever possible.

Taking a few extra minutes to practice some simple theft prevention action may eliminate you as a victim. Make this habit a part of your routine regarding your bicycle.
